Southwest of Salem excavates the nightmarish persecution of Elizabeth Ramirez, Cassandra Rivera, Kristie Mayhugh, and Anna Vasquez — four Latina lesbians wrongfully convicted of allegedly gang raping two little girls. This bizarre case is the first to be adjudicated under momentous new legislation: for the first time in U.S. history, wrongfully convicted innocents can challenge convictions based on debunked scientific evidence. The film also unravels the sinister interplay of mythology, homophobia, and prosecutorial fervor which led to this modern day witch hunt.

About the Award:

DocuWest is proud present the Marvin Louis Booker…Shoes of Justice Award which is supported by a generous grant from the Booker family. Marvin Louis Booker was killed by five Denver Sheriff’s officers in 2010. In 2014, his family won their civil rights case against the City of Denver over its use of excessive force. Marvin chose to live a lifestyle that allowed him to minister to other people living on the streets. An important component of his ministry included his feeding those less fortunate. The Booker family, and DocuWest want to thank the community for the support, and love it has provided as the family, along with the attorneys from the Denver law firm of Killmer, Lane and Newman, successfully fought to vindicate Marvin’s death at the hands of law enforcement.
