Shorts Package: Alchemy

The change begins with $30 To Antarctica which follows the story of Ka Foon Chau, who grew up an impoverished child, and retired a renowned doctor.  Big Paradise then introduces us to Robert Kidney, a musical force since the 1970s, revealing a powerful and complex person who lives and works in the shadow of the Midwestern decay. In JB we contemplate the reactions needed to realize losing is easy. Loss is hard. Leading us to Mastery, which dives deep into the philosophy of artist Casey Kawaguchi. Known mostly for his street art and Japanese aesthetic; this short portrait film explores the mind, soul, and influence of his art. While My Dad Matthew confronts us with a riddle: This is not your normal father/son story except that it is. So, while we ponder that question, in Rebuilding in Miniature meet Ali Alamedy, a displaced Iraqi artist, who makes incredibly detailed dioramas of places he has read about but has never been. Followed by Room 140. A film about immigrants just released from various detention centers who spend their first night in Oakland at a motel. Paid through the charity of a local pastor. For one night of respite, they rest, reflect, and prepare for the next phase of their journey. We then end this  transformative package, with The Ship of Gold. A film about a respected priest in Montreal, who must face accusations he doesn’t agree with.
